
Carbon School District is seeking applications for a Full Time Custodian at Helper Middle School in Helper, Utah. The school custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. In addition to regular building maintenance functions, the school custodian provides direct support to classroom teachers in set up and maintenance of furniture and equipment. The school custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature.The duties required of a custodian include replenishing stock in bathrooms, cleaning restrooms, gathering and emptying trash, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, monitoring building safety and security and dusting. Keeping the school as clean and tidy as possible is the overall responsibility of a custodian. They should be prepared to do things like moving heavy furniture to reach corners, cracks and crevices of covered parts of the room. They may have to clean laboratory equipment, such as computers and tables, mow and trim lawns and clean chimneys, flues and pipes with the use of power tools. Will work under the direction of the school principal. The Head Custodian has supervisory responsibility over the other custodians including seasonal custodial employees. Safety, cleanliness and continued efficiency of operation shall be a major goal at all times. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach about the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 100 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have previous experience in janitorial work. On behalf of Carbon School District, local law enforcement, Castleview Hospital, dispatch, EMS, and fire departments, we want to notify the parents of Sally Mauro Elementary and Helper Middle School of an active shooter DRILL. The DRILL will be conducted after school today, April 24 at Sally Mauro Elementary.
We have coordinated the DRILL to include full-scale emergency response including law enforcement, rescue, fire, ambulance, and two medical helicopters that will land on the school grounds.
You will see signage and physical blocking of streets near Sally Mauro Elementary during the DRILL from approximately 2:30 pm until approximately 4:00 pm.
School will not be in regular session during the DRILL.
Please do NOT attempt to approach the school during the DRILL.
The DRILL is part of our annual training for emergency response and school safety. We appreciate the staff and students that are assisting. All student participants have volunteered and their parents have provided approval.

HMS Parents: Reminder track fees need to paid to the office in order for students to participate in meet on Friday. Next week we start our end of year testing. Sessions will occur on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the next 3 weeks. Our end of year field trips are on May 11. Students that have a U for their citizenship will not be permitted to attend. Please have students check with the counseling office to work on the citizenship recovery process if necessary.

Carbon School District is seeking applications for a Guidance Counselor at Helper Middle School in Helper, Utah. Plays the role of academic advisor to students. If students are not meeting course requirements or are having disciplinary problems, guidance counselors may intervene to remedy the situation.. The first priority of the counselor is to ensure that students perform their best academically. Counselors in secondary education are tasked with helping adolescents navigate the unique educational, social and behavioral obstacles related to attending school. This may include issues such as staying in school and avoiding substance abuse. They must also act as social workers, seeking to identify home-based problems that may negatively impact the academic and social development of students. A school counselor is expected to be very knowledgeable of career preparation in order to provide advice to students regarding education and employment options after high school. Common duties include supplying school-to-career guidance, interpreting standardized test scores, developing guidance curriculum, providing student resources, counseling individual students, coordinating with social service agencies, maintaining records, facilitating conferences and orientating new students. They may work with students one-on-one, in a private setting with teachers and parents, or with peers in a group assembly or discussion forum.
Must have a Master's Degree and a current Utah School Counselor License or have the ability to receive the license in a timely manner.

Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques. Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals. Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP. Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations. Provides direction, supervision and evaluation of educational assistants as directed. Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations. Completes all district and state reporting requirements. Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities. Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers etc.) regarding the needs of students.

Carbon School District would like to thank the Wellington Fire Department, Wellington Police Department, and the Utah Highway Patrol for their immediate and thorough response to a minor collision involving a school bus this morning. Wellington had 8 responders arrive on the scene. Those responders were split into two teams. One team of two firefighters and EMTs worked on checking the other vehicle involved and the occupants of that vehicle. The second team of two firefighters, an advanced EMT, and a paramedic evaluated the school bus driver and students. A second bus was dispatched to the scene to safely transport the students to school.
We greatly appreciate the continued collaboration between first responders and district personnel.

HMS Parents: Reminder due to the 5th grade and 8th grade orientation events at HMS and CHS our 6th and 7th grade students will be dismissed at 11:30 - buses and parents will pick up at that time. 8th grade students will be as follows. Price students and those that are normally picked up by parents will need to be picked up at the high school at 2:15. Buses will pickup Carbonville, Spring Glen and Helper students and run their normal route at that time.

8th Grade Parents: We will be taking all 8th graders to Carbon High School on Tuesday, March 7th. We will be there from 10:30am to 2:15pm. Students will learn about the registration process, eat lunch, and then tour the school to help them start making decisions for their schedules.
Students that did not order a school lunch from Mrs. Vasquez, you need to bring a home lunch. We will NOT be allowing any food drop offs, this includes Door Dash or other similar services. The students have a shorter lunch and we are on a tight schedule. We ask that students stay for the duration of the tour and only be checked out if it is an emergency. If your student needs to be checked out you will need to contact HMS main office and they will contact Mrs. Vasquez to excuse your student. Again, please only use this for emergencies.

HMS Parents: On Tuesday March 7th the 8th grade students will be transported to CHS for their orientation day. We will have our 5th grade orientation on that same day. Sally Mauro students will walk over to our school and back for their buses. 6th and 7th grade students will be released early that day at 11:30 and bused home. The 2023-2024 school year spend plans for secondary schools are being reviewed and open for public comment in the March 8th Carbon School District Board Meeting during the General Board Meeting at 5:00pm at the District Office (251 West 400 North, Price)

HMS Parents: Sally Mauro is looking for student volunteers to participate in an Active Shooter drill that will take place on April 24th. This is on an early out day and will be held after school. Students are need for acting roles as well as general participation. This will involve multiple agencies including helicopters. Pick up permission forms in the office.
